Our Story ✿

My name is Mónica Santos Gil and I am the Founder and Creative Director of Santos by Mónica.

I always had a desire to create a brand that challenged the traditions of the fashion industry, but it wasn't until the pandemic that I was truly able to spend time conceptualizing and fully developing this project. Once I realized the potential of my idea and the opportunity I had to really invest in a brand that reflected my own values, I left my corporate fashion job in July 2020 and decided to pursue Santos full-time.

My values around sustainability and responsible business practices are at the heart of Santos, which I've also been able to use as a tool to educate consumers on consumption and resources used by the fashion industry.

Our vision of sustainable products means each piece is impeccably hand-crafted using innovative natural textiles. The cactus-based biomaterial we use has the feel and look of traditional leather, but is much more ecological, using 1/5 of the amount of water needed to produce animal leather. It is partially biodegradable and long-lasting, ensuring you will enjoy your bags for years to come.

Our RTW is made from a Eucalyptus Lyocell & Cotton blend. Lyocell is made from eucalyptus trees that are fast-growing, do not need irrigation or pesticides, and is produced in a closed-loop system that recycles almost all of its solvents with minimal waste.

We also aim to produce at a slower pace and process, focusing on made-to-order and small batch production. As a small company, this allows us to take more direct control of our inventory and reduce overproduction. We do not believe in seasons and each style we design is produced in limited quantities. For every item sold, we plant a tree with One Tree Planted as a way to give back.
